The Long-Term Advantage

Most SAT prep starts junior year and focuses on test strategy: how to handle the question types, how to manage time, how to avoid traps. That works for students who already read at a high level. For everyone else it hits a ceiling fast, because the Reading & Writing section doesn't reward tricks. It rewards the ability to read difficult academic writing closely, quickly, and accurately, and that ability takes time to build.

This course builds it early. It's designed for 9th and 10th graders, and it trains the reading skills the SAT measures a year or two before the pressure of test season. Students aren't cramming. Over each term, they become stronger readers of the kind of writing the SAT is made of, so by the time they begin formal test prep, they're starting from a much higher level.

Built by people who write the SAT material

Everything in this course was written and designed in-house by IES Test Prep. We have 25 years of experience running SAT courses and 17 SAT titles published on Amazon. We know what the test asks of students because we build material to its standard every day, and this course is built to match the modern Digital SAT.

What students do

​

• Read real academic writing. Students work through full-length readings from fields like behavioral economics, evolutionary biology, cognitive science, public policy, and the philosophy of science. These are the subject areas the Digital SAT now draws on most heavily.

• Learn how arguments are built. Each week teaches students to follow an author's reasoning: what's being claimed, how it's supported, where the argument turns, and how each part serves the whole.

• Practice compression. Alongside the long readings, students work through short, dense passages built in-house to mirror the SAT's format. This is where long-form reading skill becomes test-ready skill.

• Compare competing texts. Students read paired passages that disagree and learn to pinpoint exactly where and why two authors part ways, a core skill on the SAT and in any advanced class.

• Work in an interactive digital format. All readings and exercises are delivered through our own interactive apps, with annotation built into every text. Students have no textbooks to buy and no PDFs to track down.

 

Measurable growth, not just a score

Each term opens with a diagnostic and closes with a matched final assessment on unseen texts. Instead of a single predicted score, families receive a skill-by-skill reading profile showing precisely where their student has grown and what to focus on next.

Course Structure

The course runs as a focused 10-week term, with weekly 1.5-hour lessons designed to build deep reading mastery without overwhelming students' schedules. By completing the term, students establish a strong analytical foundation well before junior-year test prep begins.
