ARIANNA ASTUNI

Arianna is the co-owner of IES NJ and IES NYC and the co-creator of the IES Technique: Control The Test. Along with her partner, she created some of the most sought after staples in the industry that all other schools now mimic. IES (2003) was the first to run a summer boot camp. IES (2007) was the first to start a foundations class. IES (2007) was the first to run free workshops and prep-a-thons. IES is still only one of a handful of small schools that uses its “expertise in the trenches” and extensive knowledge of the material to create specific textbooks, tests, and practice material for the students. (See IES Publications) Arianna has been teaching SAT VERBAL, PSAT, ACT, GRE, SAT Foundations, and editing COLLEGE APPLICATIONS for over 17 years. She is the author of the Advanced Practice Series by IES and has trained over 100 SAT teachers over the span of her career. Anyone who follows SAT-related news knows that she has helped numerous students achieve PERFECT scores and she has single handedly helped many students prepare college applications and essays that got them into TOP TIER schools. She is herself a graduate of English Textual Studies at Syracuse University with a minor in Journalism and Women’s studies. Arianna is also a certified ESL teacher and a published poet. Before starting IES in 2000, she lived abroad in London, Paris, and Egypt and worked as the deputy editor for various magazines. She tutored many foreign students looking to study in America. Arianna’s strength lies in her ability to see exactly where the weaknesses in each individual student lie. Whether in a class setting or privately, she can hone in on the particular steps a student is missing or applying incorrectly and then, most importantly, correct for those particular questions. She is the creator of “isolated practice,” so that students can end fluctuating test scores and, instead, consistently increase their scores on any test. “SAT practice is not about how smart students are or how many SAT tests they have taken. It is about understanding the nuances of the particular test and disciplining oneself to follow the simple steps to master each type of question.” Arianna is very proud of all of her students and their successes but she is clear that it’s a joint effort between her and her staff. “IES is one of the only test prep centers that employs full-time salaried SAT teachers. Some of my teachers have been with me for over ten years. All of my teachers are published in the field of SAT. We are the most knowledgeable group out there. My teachers eat, breath, and sleep SAT. We know what we are doing. We know every level of student. If you are ready to take this endeavor seriously, we are the school for you.” At IES, students will have to work with all the teachers in some capacity. Our three-prong approach has been proven by countless success stories. Every single person at IES helps a student achieve success!

CHRISTOPHER CARBONELL

Christopher serves as both the Operations Director and Editorial Director and is a seasoned teacher for IES Test Prep. He graduated from New York University with a focus in Dramatic Writing and Asian-Pacific-American Studies. Christopher has over 17 years of experience teaching the SAT/ PSAT/ ACT Reading, Grammar, and Essay sections for IES. He constantly encourages his students to ask as many questions as possible during class, in passing, or whenever he has a free moment! Christopher will always provide thorough feedback on strategies that will help students achieve their top score. Christopher will often remind his students: “To succeed on the SAT, you have to be a P.O.E.T.!” To be a P.O.E.T. means to be a Process Of Elimination Tactician! This is an essential reminder for his students to follow the tried and true IES Technique steps before finishing a question. “When you’re a P.O.E.T., you eliminate silly mistakes and improve your accuracy and timing!” Christopher is very proud of his students (his P.O.E.T.’s) who have been accepted into top colleges including Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, New York University, etc… Some of his past students have returned to IES to gain work experience under his prestigious IES Internship Program in areas such as publications and administration. This program helps them achieve the credit they need towards high school graduation or their degree in college. In 2014, Christopher began overseeing the production of all IES Publications for both internal curriculums and market titles. He works closely with IES teachers and writers, ensuring that IES practice books and class material match the quality of the College Board. Students who use IES practice books, whether in our courses, for self-prep, or through a local school system, will find the same competencies on the real SAT. Under Christopher, IES publications have reached international school systems in Abu Dhabi and China. For new families, Christopher provides excellent academic advisement and consultation for students trying to reach their goal score with IES programs. Unlike other academic advisors in other prep companies who do not have extensive teaching backgrounds, Christopher will be direct and honest about the expected improvement of a student during enrollment. With Christopher, new parents will get a TEACHER’S perspective and exact guidance on how to improve their student’s score!

KRISTI MONIZ

Kristi has been at IES for 17 years. She came to IES after working as an office manager for a print company for 9 years and as a personal nanny for 5. With her attention to detail and her love for kids, she forged a position at IES that the owners didn’t even know they needed. She became the DIRECTOR. And like every good director, Kristi is the “eyes and ears” for every person that enters this establishment. She is the first person most people speak to and the guiding hand that helps them decide what is best for their children. She uses her experience to tailor every course for every individual. She knows everything about the industry, College Board, and all of the competitors. You can come to her with any question. It is not uncommon to see parents bearing gifts for her or to see homemade cakes piling up on her desk. She is well loved and wisely appreciated. She will tell everyone the truth – something valuable when customizing a plan unique to each student’s goal. She is IES’s secret weapon and YOUR secret weapon, too. Kristi is also the in-house guide. Firstly, she works with the teachers to best accommodate schedules that will allow them to be better teachers and also assigns and creates courses that fit their expertise. Secondly, she works with the students to find the best teacher for their style of learning. It is not uncommon to see a student hanging out in the director’s room, asking for advice about his or her next academic step. Kristi works closely with the IES owners and teachers to create classes on demand for our clients and leads the inspiration for creative solutions to accommodate our ever-busy and advanced student population. As a mother of three, an active member of her NJ township and PTO, drama coach, and dog rescuer, she can juggle many things at once. She is the point person on all web design, advertising, discounts, pricing, and events. While most companies have administrative staff that come and go or are rarely around, Kristi at IES, is ALWAYS involved. She will know your child, she will know where they are and she will always know what they need!

TRACY CHEN

Meet Tracy, an accomplished Verbal, Math, and Science teacher with over 10 years of experience in preparing students for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams; 5 years of experience teaching Chemistry at Rutgers University; and a lifelong passion for education. Holding both a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Master’s in Education, Tracy is an expert at integrating several different subjects into comprehensive lessons, and her extensive knowledge of standardized tests has enabled her to help several students achieve perfect or near-perfect scores on the SAT and gain admission to their dream universities. When people ask her how she came to be so knowledgeable about so many different subjects, she tells them the same thing she tells her students: “The most important thing to know about standardized tests like the SAT–and even the AP subject tests–is that there is a certain breadth that these tests are ‘allowed’ to test you on. Once you’ve learned these basic concepts, the rest is just learning how to see through all the tricks the test will throw at you to make these basic concepts seem harder than they really are. Also, don’t let your perception of yourself get in your own way. Even if you don’t consider yourself a ‘math person’ or an ‘English person,’ you can absolutely get a perfect score on both sections. The fact that you can learn and remember anything, from a conversation you had yesterday to a new topic you covered in class, is proof enough that your brain is always growing and adapting. If you can remember the lyrics of a new song that just came out, there is literally–and I mean it, literally–no reason you can’t master the SAT.”

BING SHEN

Bing has been teaching at IES since 2013 and has over 16 years of experience with students preparing for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, Math Level 2, and other standardized tests. He attended J.P. Stevens High in Edison and went to college at MIT. He has scored 1600 on the SAT (and 2390 when 2400 was a perfect score). He enjoys the challenge of explaining difficult problems as clearly as possible and finding questions that have multiple methods of solving. Although most of his current students are preparing for the SAT, he enjoys all of his past teaching experiences including tutoring elementary and middle school students. He is also a volunteer ESL and adult literacy teacher with Literacy NJ in his spare time.

KHALID KHASHOGGI

A career educator with a uniquely cosmopolitan outlook, Khalid Khashoggi graduated from Princeton University and traveled widely before settling in the New York-New Jersey area. There, he founded Integrated Educational Services, a tutoring company that has helped tens of thousands of students raise their standardized test scores--and attend the colleges of their dreams--since 2001. Determined to share his years of expertise, Khalid founded IES Publications in 2013. Today, students all over the United States use the books in the IES SAT Advanced Practice Series to achieve their target scores. Each volume in the series delves into a specific SAT section--math, critical reading, or writing--in a manner that is systematic, straightforward, and enlightening. Today, IES continues to expand rapidly into new areas, including unique web resources, and continues to promote Khalid's vision: test prep that works in real classroom situations, that doesn't rely on platitudes and commonplaces, and that gives students the determination and the confidence to succeed.

MARC WALLACE

With 22 years of experience in the field of mathematics education, Marc is no stranger to the content mastery, habit control, and emotional motivation that is required for his students to achieve top scores. Being a veteran of IES with over 10 years vested in the company and as the acting head of the mathematics department, he has developed a style of educating that both solidifies his students’ content knowledge and promotes systematic control over their careless mistakes. Previous to his current appointment as Head of Mathematics, Marc has accumulated 9 years of experience in the public school system, having taught multiple courses in Algebra, Geometry, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and most everything between. Those years provided insight into the valuable content the students are learning in the public school system, but also exposed the insufficiencies the students have with certain, crucial test-taking skills. This comprehensive insight, along with the experience of having tutored over a thousand students on the mathematics section of the SAT, is the reason that Marc has accumulated an impressive list of students with perfect 800s and countless acceptances to elite universities. As a lifelong musician, collegiate athlete, and writer/editor of multiple SAT publications, Marc Wallace has led an eclectic life that revolves around motivation, will, and determination. These attributes are at the core of his success in the field of SAT education and will continue to help compile IES success stories long into the future.
