Service Description

12 Online Sessions: 01/23 - 04/09 The IES Writing Club is a weekly, writing workshop style class designed for students who enjoy creative writing and who want to practice their skills in a safe space. Each week students will be invited to read short excerpts from established authors in a variety of genres and styles including, but not limited to, poetry, prose, and essays. Guided by experienced poet and workshop facilitator, Allison Baldwin, students will read and analyze each excerpt, paying particular attention to literary craft. We will discuss such elements as structure and format, content, imagery, character development, vocabulary, and persuasive argument. There may also be opportunities to explore storytelling in other forms, such as television, music, film, and news articles. Structured similarly to a college-level writing workshop, students will have opportunities to participate in focused free writing activities, sharing, and receiving feedback. Each week students will work with a variety of writing prompts and in small groups. Students will be introduced to a diverse range of authors from all backgrounds. The IES Writing Club will help students develop a disciplined writing practice. Additionally, students will develop the skills necessary for giving constructive feedback—all while building confidence in the power of their own ideas and voice. Sessions will be student-centered, meaning that students will have the opportunity to develop community guidelines and weekly activities.
