“Writing is the painting of the voice.” -Voltaire The book club is a dynamic reading club for middle school students of all levels. This fun interactive workshop is designed to create autonomous reading habits in diverse genres while allowing students to subtly develop reading strategies, speed and ease with reading, critical thinking skills, vocabulary levels, and classroom speaking. It is perfect for academic enrichment, personal enjoyment, and preparation for future coursework that requires a large reading load. The book club will help students develop discipline and confidence in the most important skill they will ever need in their academic and personal lives. Our experienced teacher, Allison Baldwin, will guide the students through a discussion on assigned chapters. Students will participate and shape the room with the teacher for exciting and fun discourse. Teacher: Allison Baldwin Saturdays 2-4p Starts August 5th, 2023 and runs every Saturday. Allison’s Bio: Allison Baldwin is a poet who combines authenticity with sass. Her work has been published most recently in the New Jersey Bards Poetry Review. Her literary interests include poetry, young adult fiction, and novels-in-verse. She holds an MFA in Poetry and Poetic Medicine from Dominican University of California and an MA in Curriculum and Teaching from Columbia University, Teachers College. She has facilitated a variety of open mics and workshops, and is currently developing her poetry collection, Divining the Silhouette. Allison has been a fan of children’s and young adult literature, ever since reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver in seventh grade. Even now, as an adult, she reads young adult literature regularly and loves how, even when it explores heavy topics, it still manages to create space for magic, hope, and connection: all aspects she will create with students.
